Zoetrope Style Ident: First Test

I've been commissioned to produce Zoetrope style, strobing idents for CG Arts and Animations upcoming exhibition at New Designers 2012 which will feature work from this years crop of talented graduates. The test below is a hodge-podge attempt at working out the technique needed to get the effect looking like an actual Zoetrope. Early day's but it's not a bad attempt and has revealed obvious areas in need of refinement. I produced this mostly in Maya and involved rendering two passes. One for the Zoetrope effect which acts a Mask (this pass also has a motion blur effect) and another pass (without motion blur) for the text. Pretty simple at the moment but it should be really effective when all is said and done...

Once I have the main animation sorted it will be incredibly simple to replace the text with whatever name I need to use. What's nice about using Maya is that I should be able to get a swooping camera movement to make it look suitably spectacular (but not distract from the work on show of course)...

For reference these were the Idents I produced for last years year show. It really synced up nicely with the visual theme of our exhibition and the intention is to do the same this year.

That's fab you're making a start, Tom - ta very much! I'm still not 100% sure re. accent colours, or whether we're going 'vintage' or what. We'll get our heads together and thrash some rules out. In this sense, it's still an open brief, so go have fun and we have to dial it back or include additional components (colour etc.) then so be it. Again - many thanks for getting stuck in already :)
