Tom - I think you've got to make a decision re. black and white - there's something not quite right here - it doesn't feel balanced, and now the pictures seem VERY important, when in fact they're just 'garnish'. I know this isn't what you want to hear. Also, it seems to my eyes at least, that the bannister needs to be picked out somehow - rim-lit - as the curve disappears into the shadows; also (i know, i know) I'd consider shrinking some of those paintings in size - especially the one on the lowest wall.. if not totally b/w then at least as desaturated as Dorian's portrait - if the theatre is black and white (and it should be) then I think that creates a logic you can't deny elsewhere...
