Minor Project: Alan! Trees, or...that takes how long to render?!?!

Using Bosch's trees looked thoroughly awful, so I resorted back to paint effects. The result is nice but this took 6:30 minutes to render, thats too long! Its only four trees as well... I need a more efficient way of doing this or its going to be one sparse garden...

I'm guessing its either, have 'hero' trees or comp them in on a seperate layer.

You composite paint fx in on a different layer. Why can't you make some of your own trees with card for the leaves?

yup, gonna give that a go. :)

The answer is to mix and match.

1) You can use images of trees.
2) You can use paint effects (Converted to polygons).
3) You can make an image from a paint effect. Render a mixture of images by varying preferences, converting, and creating a render with alpha. Plug into a shader/card.
4) You can render on a seperate layer and composite.

In a project I did, I made a tree and just duplicated it into a line (All in a new scene). Set up a camera directly in front, rendered it with alpha, and then used this render to texture a flat plane for the background stuff. Then the foreground stuff I used models / card leaves.

Yeah, thats what I'm going to do. It's mostly going to be cards as the impact on render times seems to be minimal, where as adding more models just increases rendering time too much. :(
