The Penguin Book of Twentieth Century Protest

In a speech deliver to his national assembly in 1965 Ho Chi Minh declared:

The UC Imperialists are precisely the saboteurs of the Geneva Agreements, yet they have brazenly declared that because they wished to ‘restore peace; and ‘defend the Geneva Agreements’ they bought US troops to our country to carry out massacres and destruction. The US Imperialists are precisely those who are devastating our country and killing our people, yet they hypocritically declared that they would give $1 billion to the people in Vietnam and the other Southeast Asian countries to ‘develop their countries and improve their life’.
(MacArthur 1998:286)

In a speech given by Betrand Russell broadcasted via radio to American Soldiers on the South Vietnam Liberation Front radio station he told troops:

The Government of Ngo Dinh Diem killed, tortured, imprisoned and mutilated hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and was able to do this solely because of the military support and direction of the United States.

It ought to be clear that the National Liberation Front, which you know as the Vietcong, took up arms to defend their people against a tyranny more brutal that the Japanese occupation itself, for more died under Diem than under the Japanese. This is the responsibility of the United States Government.
(MacArthur 1998:289)
