I am I the only one who thinks this looks really quite naff, like genuinely really bad looking. The alien design..I..I don't know what to say really...

...What is going one with those blue catfish man aliens with american accents. And alien love, urrrgh alien love is the worst thing ever, seriously...no more alien love please.

You know, it's funny - I had very similar thoughts when I first watched the trailer; it all has a 'Rodney Matthews' feel about it (One-armed fantasy illustrator - actually very good, really) - a sort of insipid pastoral aesthetic; christ, that sounds judgemental; James Cameron can do action like no one else, so I'm certain it will boast some incredible set-pieces; plus it's got Sigourney Weaver in the cast (did you ever see the photograph taken of her as one of Klimt's women - very apposite); anyway, the jury is out, but let's be very clear - technology can be way ahead, but it's the story that counts - it's always the story! Just watched the trailer for The Descent 2 (I know - what!?); I loved the first movie, not because of the monsters, but rather because all the she-rage subtext - and now they've made a sequel in which the lone survivor does make it out of the caves after all (which she apparently does in the American ending of the original...) Hurumph!

Ive never seen Descent but it looks exactly like this film which I had the misfortune of watching once.

Speaking of shitty horror films I have 'Ticks' to watch, though I do have some others I want to watch before I suffer through that and I think I'm seeing Inglourious Basterds next week, not exactly super hyped for it. Hopefully Antichrist hits the interwebs soonish as well.

Super geeky lame question but what date does everything start, gotta get my shit together y'know.

nah - that's The Cave; it doesn't have the menstrual-vibe of The Descent (clue - the monsters are a Macguffin!) So, you've rented Ticks - haha! - you'll hate it, I'm guessing, but I have a terrible old soft-spot for 'nature-attacks' movies - even the bad ones; I think it was because I was born in '75 - the year Jaws was released... check out 'Frogs' - a pile o shite, but it just makes me happy somehow...

and while you're at it...

consider 'Bug'

'Kingdom of the Spiders' (with the Shatner!)

'Slugs - The Movie' (yes, really...)

'Food of the Gods'

and finally (and perhaps worst of all) 'The Giant Spider Invasion

Anyway, more usefully, the answer to your question is that term begins on 24th September, though it's possible you won't get your briefing until the tuesday, but I'll confirm with Alan and let you lot know...

the 24th? That's like 4 months since the end of the last term. Outside of politicians, you lecturers have the cushiest job on the planet don't you?

... of course, what you don't realise is that we don't go on holiday when you do - indeed, the good ship UCA sails on without students all year; I'm back in the building on September 1st, having spent a good part of my annual leave preparing stuff for you lot to consume in the coming months... so there! Anyway, you don't have time to be taking side-swipes at indolent academics, you've got your body-weight in cinematic shite to wade through - now be off with you, guttersnipe, I have a lecture on Deconstruction to design... :-)
